Tipping Advice

Monday, October 14, 2013

As an etiquette expert, one of the most frequent kinds questions I'm asked is about tipping. Most people know to tip waiters and waitresses; manicurists, barbers, and hair stylists; and cab drivers. The customary tip amount  for these professionals is 15-20% of the pretax amount. However, we sometimes unintentionally overlook professional people that deserve tips. Pamela Eyring, President of Protocol School of Washington, participated in the following article "10 People You're Not Tipping Enough. This article offers great advice on tipping professionals that we might not tip regularly.

It's also important to remember, to say "thank you" to a service professional that provides good service. Additionally, you might want to acknowledge exceptionally good service to the person's supervisor. While tips are standard and appreciated, a kind word goes a long way in reaffirming to someone that he or she is respected and the service provided is valued. Likewise, when a service professional is not performing his or her duties as expected, do not dismiss that person. A person who is having a bad day is more likely to respond positively to kindness. You may feel that this person doesn't deserve a tip, but not leaving one will add to his or her frustrations and will reflect poorly on you. The way you treat people, whether they are providing exceptional service or not, is just as important as the tip.
